The Battle of Fredericksburg (December 11–15, 1862) was a crushing Union defeat in the American Civil War, featuring the first major opposed river crossing. Union General Ambrose Burnside launched disastrous frontal assaults against Robert E. Lee’s entrenched Confederate army on Marye’s Heights, resulting in over 12,500 Union casualties compared to roughly 5,000 Confederate.
